A big reason I’m drawn to films is to go places I’ve never been or to see something I’ve never seen. So when I come across a film that presents the familiar in an utterly unexpected way, as the film Surface does, I get excited. Surface shows the world as we know it, streets of busy pedestrians, break dancers, and loiterers from a new vantage point—underneath. We look upward from our quiet sanctuary beneath the surface watching the rhythmic chaos of life play out above us. We are powerless—trapped on the other side—left to watch life’s beauty and tragedy unfold.
