Inspired by Edward Gorey’s abecedarian book The Gashlycrumb Tinies, Accidents, Blunders and Calamities from James Cunningham and his Media Design School students is a dark, fun/gore-filled 5-min short based around a bleak bedtime story from a father possum.
Screened at SXSW, Annecy, Clermont-Ferrand and Comic-Con this FX-driven piece takes its audience on a gruesome tour of 26 of the most brutal deaths ignorant humans could exact upon animals – all portrayed in glorious CGI.
Featuring a total of 30 meticulously-crafted animals Accidents, Blunders and Calamities was written, directed and produced by Media Design School Senior Lecturer James Cunningham and created by a team of 44 third year Bachelor of Art and Design students.
The second film we’ve featured from the New Zealand institution in the last year, following hot-on-the-heels of snail Horror-Comedy Escargore (released around Halloween in 2015), the school’s latest film not only showcases some excellent skills when it comes to blending live-action and CGI, but once again displays the kind of twisted humour we know internet audiences hungrily devour.
