Filmmaker and Music Video director Zia Anger returns to Short of the Week with intoxicating 9-minute black-comedy My Last Film – a surprising short looking to give the independent film scene a sobering slap-in-the-face.

Featuring a powerhouse cast, which includes the multi-faceted Mac DeMarco, Lola Kirke, Kelly Rohrbach and Rosanna Arquette (in particularly captivating form), in some of the most unusual roles they’ll probably be asked to play in their careers (we’d love to know how Anger pitched DeMarco’s role to him), My Last Film is a short of incredible creativity, bound to leave an impression long after watching.

Starting off feeling very much like 90% of American indie-films you ever watched, to speak about what comes next in too much detail feels as if it would weaken the impact of the piece and in all honesty spoil the power of the film. And whilst that may feel like somewhat of a copout on my behalf, it feels as if anything I could say about My Last Film would pale in comparison to the strong message of the film.

With this in mind, my advice (if you’re reading this before watching) is to sit back, hit play and let Anger’s latest think-piece go to town.

Though Anger hasn’t provided a lot of background for her latest piece, she asks that ‘if you have arrived here for a cathartic experience please consider a donation to the ACLU‘.
