As we move into December, “End of Year” lists will start popping-up all over the internet. Here at S/W our awards will be announced in early 2021, with discussion and planning starting this month. Often when it comes to picking our winners (a process which involves every S/W team member picking a personal top ten), these Best of the Month playlists are often a good indicator of what you can expect to see selected in our annual accolades – so don’t be surprised to see one (or more) of the films below recognised in our yearly prizes.

With Thanksgiving meaning we had a quiet end to November, we only featured 17 short films this month (one of the lowest monthly totals we’ve had in 2020), but made up for the lack of films with an in-depth article with S/W alum Elizabeth Lo and a large update to our Ten Best Short Films on Netflix article.

Team Favourites

During a period which saw stories of enchanted fish, a haunted forest and a lovesick mosquito hit S/W, it’s no surprise that the trio of films our team selected as the Best of the Month makes for eclectic viewing. Featuring a genre-bending tale of a lost Nintendo game, a darkly comedic thriller and an inventive take on media sensationalism, corporate ass-covering, YouTube radicalization, and America’s gun culture (yep, all in one film!), I think this list perfectly highlights the strange tastes of the S/W team.

Most Viewed

In the three months that I’ve been tracking the Most Viewed short for this monthly round-up, science-fiction has dominated and in November it was no different with Annick Blanc’s La couleur de tes lèvres (The Colour of your Lips) proving our most popular pick throughout November. Like the two other sci-fi shorts – Tunnelen (The Tunnel) and Avarya – that were popular in September and October, Blanc’s 18-min short is set in a Dystopian future where the future for humankind is looking bleak. You would have thought we’d want a little cheering-up in 2020.
