With October over and 2020 drawing to a close, there’s so much going on in the world at the moment, we all probably need a welcome distraction more than ever. With 24 films featured on our site – a third of them Horror-themed in our week long lead-up to Halloween – along with filmmaker updates, festival previews and an in-depth interview with director Jacob Chase (on his journey from short film to feature), hopefully our content over the last 31-days has provided your mind with a short vacation from the real world and all of its current problems [apologies for the depressing intro – I think my mind needs a holiday].

Team Favourites

From weight loss camp to scout camp, our October selections took you on tense bus rides through Iran, frantic motorbike escapes through a world of autonomous vehicles and into the headspace of frustrated commuters. The trio of films selected by our team as our favourites from the month were an eclectic bunch however – featuring a trippy animation that takes you on a journey into the mind of a millennial, a drama packed with internal tension and a Horror from an exciting new voice in the genre – we hope this 30-minute playlist makes for a diverse, thought-provoking watch:

I talked last month about how Sci-fi has always been hot-property in short film and my point was proved once again with October’s most-viewed film Avarya. A massively ambitious 20-min short which marries brain-bending appeal to luscious CG animated visuals, its high-concept premise made it a must have for the S/W team and we’re happy to see it getting the attention it rightly deserves.

Play
Sci-Fi Gökalp Gönen

Avarya

Abandoning Earth in the hope of finding a new habitable planet, a human is trapped in his own ship after the robot overseer finds every single candidate planet unsuitable.
