Laughter has a way of making the impossibly uncomfortable a bit more bearable. These boundary-pushing storytellers used a spectrum of humor from the light and quirky to the dark and disturbing that had us both rolling on the floor and learning a little something new along the way. Whether it’s the unusual origin story of a record label, a birthday prank gone wrong, or an old family rivalry resurfacing, these films found a new way for us to enjoy the absurd and taboo—even if we don’t condone it. As one of the most under-represented genres at the Oscars, great comedy deserves more recognition, so join us, kick back, and enjoy a laugh or two.

Honorable Mention

With the disaster behind us, we can’t help but laugh at the most bizarre film launch we’ve ever orchestrated. Not only was it revealed that famed actor Shia LaBeouf’s film was a blatant plagiarism, but so were his responses to many of our interview questions as well as his half-hearted apologies that followed on Twitter. Add in a sky-written apology to Daniel Clowes, a retirement from public life, and media appearances with Shia wearing a paper bag over his head and it’s unclear if this story is a provocative Lenny Bruce-style comedy or a sad drama of a celebrity unravelling.
