It’s been an eventful and film-packed year for Short of the Week. Let’s take a moment to look back at the biggest and most important events in the world of short films from this past year.

Early 2013

The year began with our celebration of the greatest short films of the previous year in our second annual Short of the Week Awards 2013.

Sundance’s short film lineup featured an unprecedented number of online films, which we were all over——Sundance 2013 Films

We launched The Weekly, our new weekly newsletter for those looking to get all things SOTW delivered in one, clean weekly email——The Weekly—Official Short of the Week Email Newsletter

With the final Oscar nominations announced, we saw more short films hit online this year than in any previous years——Oscar Short Film Nominees. And just a week later we saw those films pulled under pressure from an offline distributor again stressing the increasing tension between the traditional film world and the web——The Changing Game of Distribution

Spring 2013

In partnership with PBS Digital Studios, we launched a new YouTube show produced by our own Ivan Kander——Announcing the SOTW + PBS YouTube Show!

We pulled together a new essential resource for filmmakers looking to take advantage of an online release without hurting their chances at festivals. It turns out, we found, that over 66% of festivals don’t really care——The Essential List of Festivals and Online Eligibility

Summer 2013

This summer saw the launch of our new submission service where we introduced premium submissions to guarantee filmmakers a viewing by a SOTW Editor complete with personal feedback on their film——Submit Your Film

Late 2013

We launched Shia LaBeouf’s first short film, HowardCantour.com, then pulled it offline when it was discovered he had adapted the story from a Daniel Clowes comic without authorization or attribution—An Update on HowardCantour.com

2013 has been an amazing year for us. We’d like to thank the editors, writers, and contributors who dig deep into their souls to reveal a new hidden truth about humanity in their reviews for you every week.

Most of all, we want to thank all of you for tuning in to watch the films, for voicing your thoughts in our discussions, and for sharing a few precious moments on this planet with us every week.

We’ve got a lot planned for 2014! Stay tuned.
