Tribeca's (Online) Film Festival this year is quite extensive: 6 feature films, 9 in-competition shorts and these9 "retro" shorts from the festival's past, all available for free! We'll cover this year's competition shorts in a series of forthcoming posts, but remember that Tribeca has their own spin on this online thing, so make sure to reserve a 24-hour screening window for each film in advance. These 9 retro shorts are a bit easier to manage, rather than signing up for specific 24-hour screening periods, they are available to view at any time between now and May 1st.
Jean Anne Lauer, director of short film programming at Fantastic Fest, joins us to discuss her experiences in the short film arena and what the festival is looking for in a selected film.
North America's largest festival dedicated to short film returns next week. For the second year organizers have created an online component to supplement the proceedings.

Palm Springs! We are very close to the arrival of North America's most important film festival dedicated to shorts. I know not everybody follows the festival scene, and I know it gets confusing because I'm always tweeting that Festival X is the most-_____ festival in all of _____, but for short films, trust me, Palm Springs Shortfest is a pretty big deal.
Making a great short film requires a certain kind of alchemy; because there are no hard-set rules in regards to running time, subject matter, or even medium, filmmakers traverse a tricky path on the road to festival -- and online audience -- acceptance. I was lucky enough to sit down at the San Francisco International Film Festival with a few of the shorts filmmakers that were in attendance and get insight into their process, ask what lessons they learned on their latest productions, and find out what they believe makes a good short film.
Sundance is here! Yours truly will be attendance for the first time, but, as it's been for the last 6 years, all of you at home can partake in the excitement too through the Sundance Online Short Film Program. After a two year collaboration with YouTube, the festival has moved to giant content portal Yahoo! and their relatively new video platform Yahoo! Screen.
Friday I reviewed the 9 retrospective short films available to watch for free in the Tribeca Streaming Room. They underwhelmed me, which I found oddshouldn't the program have been comprised of nothing but slam-dunk, all-star selections? Anyway, today we shift focus to the films that are actual 2011 Tribeca Film Fest selections, and fortunately I think they are much better.
