Winner![php]playlist(9058);[/php] Last year saw interactive films finally come into their own as a format for real storytelling. This year, Bear 71 upped the ante with even more interactivity allowing viewers to navigate a map of security cameras as they track a bear across a wildlife refuge.
This years winning live-action filmmakers represent a diverse group: a star feature film directing duo, a veteran commercial director, a pair of award-winning photojournalists, a Canadian writing/directing duo, and a young LA up and comer. What all these creators share is an ability to tell fantastic stories.
We honor the top animated shorts from the past year with a collection of innovative films spanning 2D, 3D, and some too difficult to label.
We are excited to announce the official Short of the Week Awards 2013 nominees! We've nominated the top 10 films in each of our three categoriesAnimation, Live-Action, and New Mediaas the most innovative stories from the past year. These are filmmakers who are breaking new ground in the stories they tell, the techniques they use, and the way they reach an audience.
Sundance is right around the corner, and we're excited! For the fifth year running we will be covering the festival's online program, this year sponsored by YouTube again after last year's stint at Yahoo!. But, with the ever-growing reach, power and legitimacy of online video, once again we've noticed that there is a healthy selection of content picked for Sundance that is available to watch right now! Sundance has been a pioneer in destigmatizing short film's online, doing away with all their premiere restrictions a few years ago.
As you might have noticed, this year we dispense with what has our been our traditional year-in-review Top Ten list (examples here) in order to highlight even more quality deserving content than that stale format allows. The SotW Awards are the result, and last week, after surveying an incredible year's worth of short film picks, we presented our favorite Animation, Live-Action and New Media pieces of 2011.
We honor the best new media short films from a variety of emerging genres and formats like Branded, Crowdfunded, Fan Films, Festival Films, and Interactive Films.
Best Documentary[php]playlist(7788);[/php] With technology giving a platform to hordes of tenacious, DSLR-wielding documentarians, the short doc has never been more popular, or so mind-numbingly repetitive. But, just when you think that every ornery old lady, sensitive "artist" or performer of a single human-pet-trick has had their life digitally preserved in a gauze of shallow depth of field, Sean Dunne comes around to show you how marvelously strange our human species is.
